Meet the Team – Conor Derrick, Trainee Assistant Manager
Now it’s time to meet the newest member of our team. Friendly and a fast learner, it’s our Trainee Assistant Manager Conor Derrick.
How would you sum up your background in a tweet?
I graduated from Northumbria University and worked as a PE teacher prior to travelling around America and Canada where I got to tour the some ‘big name’ breweries and distilleries. I started working for The Pip Stop’s pop up shop in the Metro Centre last October before moving to the Maiden Law branch in the New Year.
What’s the best drink advice you’ve ever gotten?
Putting a dab of salt on your tongue when tasting a red wine. It’s amazing. It takes away the tannins allowing you to taste the full flavour of the wine. As someone who doesn’t usually drink red wine this has helped me explore end enjoy a wider variety of wines.
What is your favourite food and wine combination?
I love crab legs with a Sauvignon Blanc. The lemon wedge that gets served with the crabs legs adds an acidity that makes the wine almost seem sweeter when you drink it.
On your ideal night out, you’re drinking…..?
What alcohol cliche would you put into room 101 and why?
The idea that single malt whisky is the be all and end all of whisky, and that it can’t be mixed with anything “except more whisky”. There are some fantastic bourbons, and blended whiskeys on the market at the moment that I feel people pass on.
They buy into the old time tradition of middle aged men drinking straight whisky in their slippers and house coat. This works for some people but it narrows your horizons. For example I love The Lakes One blended whisky mixed with some Lanchester Ginger Wine. It’s the perfect winter warmer!
Your Pip Stop unsung hero?
My personal favourite is the Allendale Firegold, a fantastic Double IPA that goes down far too easily! It has an almost tropical flavour with hints of caramel.
