Meet the Team – Jennifer Scott, Manager
In the first of our Meet the Team series we’d like to introduce you to our store manager, and the one who keeps us organised, Jennifer Scott.
How would you sum up your background in a tweet?
I started at The Pip Stop 3 years ago, a few months before the opening of our store in County Durham. This is my first role in the wine industry. I am a bit of a history nerd and I have a History degree from Newcastle University. I love travelling and seeing new places.
What’s the best drink advice you’ve ever received?
Your palate changes. The amazing thing I found was that the more different styles of wine you try, the more you appreciate them and the more your taste buds develop. It’s a bit like training yourself to eat spicy food (although I still haven’t quite got the hang of that).
What is your favourite food and wine combination?
Stilton and dessert wine. It’s definitely true that opposites attract and this works because they’re so different! The cheese alters the taste of the wine so much, but I think it makes it better. The tartness of the blue cheese is complemented by the sweetness in the wine. The best way to end a nice meal.
On your ideal night out, you’re drinking…..?
A gin and tonic, not Gordon’s and not overly diluted with tonic and ice! There’s so many different gins out there at the moment so there’s no excuse for sticking to Gordon’s or Bombay Sapphire. It’s great to go to a nice gin bar/festival to see what the up and coming gins are. Especially if you try their recommended serves.
The idea that sulphur in wine causes headaches. This is not true at all. The most common reason for a ‘wine head’ is simply dehydration. For those who only get a bad head from red wine it will be the tannins (the furry sensation you get in your mouth when you drink a red wine) which are your enemy, so try lighter styles. The trace amounts of sulphur in wine should only make you ill if you’ve got some sort of allergy.
Your Pip Stop unsung hero?
German wines tend get a bit of a bad rep but the Anselmann range is fantastic. My personal favourite is the Weißburgunder (which is the German word for Pinot Blanc). It’s a dry but aromatic white wine with flavours of nectarine and white peach, which make it really tasty and moreish.
